EXI’ENDITURE EXCEEDS REVENUE.

The statement of receipts and expenditure of the consolidated fund for the first quarter of the financial year, published in tho Gazette, shows the revenue total i 11,100,839, as against X 1,107,421 in the corresponding quarter of last year, and territorial revenue amounted to .£27,721, against £27,631 ; the aggregate was X 1,101,560, as against £R135,052, an increaso of £25,508, while the increase in the previous year was £55,628. The customs show a decrease of £24,147, stamps £1455, and Land and Income Tax £6SS. The increases were: Postal £4161, beer duty £1863, railways £35,376, registration £875, marine £4Ol. miscellaneous £10,032, and territorial £OO. Revenue was increased by receipts in aid £57,000, and recoveries £5,603. making a total revenue for the quarter of £1.224,253. The expenditure shows an increase of £148,432; last year there was a decrease of £10,315. The permanent appropriations for the past quarter totalled £860,604. or £58,787 more than in the corresponding quarter, and the Departmental expenditure totalled £632,403, or £80,645 more than in the June quarter of last year. The actual expenditure was thus £1.403.187. while revenue from all sources was £1,224,253. In the Public Works fund there was a balance at credit at the beginning of the quarter of £232,516. and proceeds of sale of debentures brought in £1,000,514. It appears that four per cent, debentures to the amount of half a million were sold in London during the quarter. The receipts, including the balance brought forward, was £1,308,051. On the expenditure side it is shown that £417,213 was spent on public works, against £151.640 in the corresponding quarter of last year. The expenditure on railways totalled £265,133. Tho expenditure and re-payments together totalled £622,023, leaving the public works fund in credit to the amount of £686,028 on 30th June.
