The visitors from New South Wales played their firs' game on Saturday against the Wellington team, and wore beaten after an exciting game by 17 points to 10. There was an attendance of nearly 5000. The spectators were greatly pleased at the fast play and free scoring. Wellington had the advantage of the strong wind in the first spell, and put up 11 points against o. On changing ends the New South Wales team rushed the game and quickly scored a try, and a goal from a mark. Tho Wellington men expected to be easily beaten, but played a splendid forward game, keeping the ball at the toe. Each side scored alternately, and the game was in doubt to the last minute, as just before time the Syduey-siders very nearly scored another try, aud immediately afterwards had an easy chance at goal from a mark. Wickham, who had already kicked one fine goal, this time failed, and the bell rang immediately. Mattson scored three of Wellington's : tries, and Wallace kicked a splendid goal from a difficult angle. Tho visitors are a light, active team, quick to take advantage of openings, but not strong in defence.

Three - quarters : Smith (Auckland), McGregor (Auckland), Jacobs (Southland), Allen (Taranaki). Halves: Humphreys (Taranaki), Wood (Wellington), Duncan (Dunedin). Forwards: Dodd (Wellington), Udy (Wairarapa), Drake and Cross (Canterbury), Cunningham (Auckland), O’Dowd (Taranaki), and Purdie (Southland).
