SENSATION IN MELBOURNE.
STICKING-UP CASE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Melbourne, August 10. One of the most sensational sucking-up eases in the annals of the colony occurred early this morning on the trurn lino between Auburn and Hawthorne. About one o’clock the driver of tho last horse tram from the city was confronted by a masked man, who presented a revolver at his head.
As soon as the tram stopped, three other men, masked and armed, jumped on. One stationed himself at the front and tho other near the door of the ear, where a third threatened to shoot anyone who resisted or made a noise. They relieved seven men aboard of money, ranging from over .£l3 to a few shillings, and jewellery. They also took tho driver’s box containing over X’o and a quantity of tickets. One passenger attempted to resist, but was thrown to the tloor and a revolver so forcibly presented between the eyes that it inflicted a nasty wound. Tho scheme was well planned on a sparsely-populated part of the line. It was carried out in a few minutes.
A large force of police were scouring tho district within a short interval, but so far fruitlessly.
