THE SCOW URUROA.
SUCCESSFULLY FLOATED YES TERDAY.
The three-masted scow Ururoa, which had been aground on the Waikanae beach 1 since Sunday morning, was successfully floated yesterday afternoon. The salvage operations were conducted by Captain I Davidson, representative of _ the New Zealand Underwriters’ Association, who arrived from Napier yesterday morning. Captain Davidson brought with him a strong steel wire cable, and this was shipped on board the Noko, together with a couple of anchors. About half-past eleven, the Noko left the river with the gear for the purpose of laying it in position. The anchors taken by the Noko consisted of the Ururoa’s second large anchor, which was carted round from the beach, and a smaller one obtained from the schooner Waiapu. A long wire hawser was also obtained from the Union Company’s s.s. Te Anau. The strong westerly wind which prevailed during the day was much in the vessel’s favor, and there was a good deal less surf than thero had been since the vessel went ashore. Tho line was quickly in order, and the stranded scow was drawn off the beach an hour before flood tide without much trouble. A large crowd of spectators watched the operations from the shore, and general satisfaction was expressed when the vessel was floated. Tho Ururoa, after picking up her anchors, was towed into the river by the Noko and berthed at the wharf.
