C..J.C. GRAND NATIONAL MEETING

By Telegraph. —Press Association. Christchurch, last night. The following acceptances have been received for the second day’s races : Sumner Handicap, l j miles.

NOTES AND ANTICIPATIONS,

(Special to Times.) "Auckland, last night. Splondid acceptances have been received for tho second day’s racing of the C.J. Club’s Grand National Meeting, and good racing should result. The programme to-day opens with tho Sumner Handicap, one and a quarter milos, for which a field of a dozen have accepted. St. llario 10.11, Peerage 9.13, and Wliitirca 9.12 appear to be the pick of the hunch, and of the three I fancy tho chances of St. llario and Peerage in tho order named. Tho son of St. Leger has a number of first-class performances to recommend him, and seou at his best should lead tho field home.

Tho Hunt Club Cup Steeplochnso has a field of seven engaged, and tho top-weight, 1C Jam 12.7, should hold his opponents safe.

Tho August Handicap, six furlongs, has sixteen acceptors, and about a dozen should see tho post. St. Denis heads the list with 10.12, whilst the Gisborne representative Tauhci is weighted a pound less. Conqueror and Cora Linn arc also well in with the same weight as Mr Harding’s mare. A splendid race should result, and 1 am inclined to favor Conqueror, with Cora Linn and Tauhei as his nearest attendants.

The Beaufort Steeplechase, three miles, has five engaged, and this should be a struggle between Straybird and Opaku, but tho Auckland horse should about win.

For the Second Hunters’ Hurdles, ono and thrcoquartcr milos, thero are six acceptors, and Doopey and Larboard Watch should furnish the winner.

Huku should bo too good for tho others engaged in tho Merrivale Hurdles. The Islington Handicap has a largo field, and Crusoe, Mars, and Jabber are considered to bo well in, whilst the Gisborne representative may bring off a surprise. Of tho trio I like Jabber, with Crusoe as his most troublesome opponent. Tho Grand National Hurdles is the event of the day, and is bound to result in a good finish. Hotu 11.5, Tho Needle 10.13, and Hadyn 11.0 are the popularfancies, whilst Moifaa, Roller, and Long Tom have many admirers, tho latter being whispered as a “ good thing.” The Needle has a number of good performances on tho llat to recommend him, and latest reports state that he isaproficient jumper. Ho should, therefore, bo amongst the leading division at the finish, and whatever beats him should win. Hotu and Haydn should fill the other places.
