The infant daughter of James MeLellan, merchant, aged 18 months, was drowned in a bucket of water at her parents’ residence, Abel Smith-street, yesterday, having lost her balance and fallen in while playing. The gold exported from New Zealand during the six months ended .June 30th totalled 217,4780 k , valued at .£844,888, which is a record for the past ten years. The Railway Department has arranged to apply the electric tablet system, such as is now in use from Wellington to the Hutt, to the running of trains on the Dunedin-.Mosgiel section, so as to render it impossible for collisions to occur. The system will afterwards bo extended to the Dunedin-Waitili line, and then to all the main lines in tiro colony.

CONCILIATION

The Conciliation Board to-day commenced hearing the iron and brass moulders’ dispute. The unionists demand Is 4.1 d per hour, and a week’s work of 44 hours. Several minor points were settled at the conference. It was decided to attach employers in Wanganui, Palmerston, and Napier as parties to the dispute.
