Weights and Measures.
(To the Editor of the Times.) Sir, — I would like to know if it comes within the province of the newlyappointed Inspector of AYeights and Measures to enquire into such things as what weight of tobacco goes to a pound. Tobacco is to supposed to be sold by the pound, and on Saturday I endeavored - to get a pound of Derby tobacco at the price asked for all round, 5s 6d. But on asking for the tobacco to be put on the scales I was first mot with refusal. Then I went to another shop, where the tobacco was placed on the scales and was found to be short weight. I pointed this out and was told that they only gave seven sticks to the pound. Then becoming curious I went to other shops, and in nearly all eases received like replies. Now, what I want to know is if there is any standard to be taken in this matter. I hold that if I had taken seven sticks as a pound weight at any shop and paid for it, I could have sued the shopkeeper for giving me short iveight. Should not all sellers who only give seven sticks declare that it is not byweight ? —I am, etc., S. SORAGG.
