ARCADIA WINS THE GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE.
AN EASY VICTORY.
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Melbourne, Aug. 11. For the second day of the Caulfield Winter Meeting the weather was dull. -The main event resulted :
Grand National Steeplechase. Arcadia, 10.7, Curtin ... 1 Sir Arthur, 10.2, Brooke ... 2 Freedom, 11.3, Mahoney ... 3
Sixteen started. Tho betting was 9to 2 against Bethnal, 7 to 1 Freedom, 16 to 1 Arcadia. From a good start Freedom and Crusado made the running together until the second time round. Crusado led over the treble on the third time, followed by Bay Eagle and Freedom. The latter led at the last fence, followed by Sir Arthur. Once in tho straight Arcadia went to the front, and won easily by eight lengths. Time, Bmin. 9sec. Bethnal (tho top weight) and five others fell.
ADELAIDE RACES,
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Adelaide, Aug. 11. The National Hurdle Race resulted : Ramsley (Holmes) 1 Hornpipe (Derrick) ... ... 2 Idd (McGowan) 3 Eleven started. Ramsley won by two lengths. Time, 6.54. Div., £l2 Is 6d.
RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES,
THE GISBORNE HORSE HAIRTRIGGER.
DOES THE BEST TIME DURING PRESENT TRAINING.
[By Telegraph —Press Association.] Christchurch, last night. At Ricearton the weather was again dull yesterday morning, but large numbers of spectators wero rewardod by some interesting work. Sundial, Forward Guard, and Employer t before breakfast galloped a strong six furlongs. After breakfast Cutts sent Somerled a good working gallop seven furlongs on tho cinders, tho time boing 1.32. V. Cannie Chiol and Glenaladalc did useful cautering. Moifaa cantered three times round the inner grass track, and then covered tho other round at three-quarter pace, finishing well. Goldspur galloped a good half-mile. This horse being very well is considered likely to win a race at tho meeting. Ostiak worked over a mile, at the last five furlongs going fast. Military and Cavalry did some cantering, and thon dashed over the four furlongs in 52 sees. Marina, Long Tom, and Larboard Watch were sent over tho hurdles. Marina shaped well, but Long Tom appeared to always have her measure. The Guard and Gobo went once round the fences, but not taking the post and rail fenco. Both shaped well, but no pace was attempted, l’ipi, alone, got over the schooling fence in capital style, jumping cleanly and showing plenty of pace. Hotu jumped two hurdles nicely, and then cantered a couple of rounds on the cindors. Hairtrigger and Haydn wont togetbor over a round of tho schooling hurdles, run in 2.55, the best time yet done during the present training. Haydn pulled off at the end of the first round, but Hairtriggor went on for another circuit, shaping excellently. Benzoin galloped a mile on tho sand track in lmin 48sees, tho last six furlongs being done in lmin 201- secs, a very good go. The horse must take some boating in the Winter Cup. Dundas and Lady Dundas went five furlongs on the cinders in lmin 61 sees. Straybird had a fast round on tlic cinders with Muscovite. Tho former beat his companion easily in 2mins 2sces, a really good performance. Roller and Waitio wero schooled over a round of fences, both shaping well, but they did not negotiate the post and rail fence. Duffer, Apremeto and Hempio wero associated in a gallop over two rounds of hurdles. Hempie and Duffer finished together, the others wero beaten off. The first round occupied 1.57. Nipapu was too good for Mangatera over tho fences. Mars, Derringcotte, Whitirea, Jester, Derringdo, and many othors were given useful exercises.
TAUHEI FAVORED FOR THE WINTER CUP.
Social Pest, Straybird, and Roller are liked for the Steeplechase; The Needle, Dartmoor, and Hotu for the Hurdles; and Tauhei, Battleaxe, and St. Denis for the Winter Cup.
