London, Aug. 9. The Times says that Sir G. S. Clarke's appointment to Victoria will be welcome to all friends of the consolidation of the ties between the Motherland and the Commonwealth. The selection is due to the valuable advice and assistance he was able to give Lord Hopetoun on questions whereon l Sir G. S. Clarke was long a recognised authority. CHARRED REMAINS. Sydney, Aug. 10.
