The local team appeared then to be content with acting on the defensive. After fast play Wellington scored a try, from which a goal was kicked. Just on call of time Slattery, following up a high kick which the Otago fullback failed to take, scored a try, and Wallace making no mistakes with the kick, the visitors won by one point.

WIN FOR WAIRARAPA.
[By Telegraph Press Association.] Napier, last night. The interprovincial football match, Wairarapa v. Hawke’s Bay, was played on the Recreation Ground on Saturday. The teams were very evenly matched, but the state of the weather prevented anything like brilliant play on either side. The visitors’ backs were superior, but their forwards were beaten by the local men, who carried the ball away from the serum and the line time after time. The safe defence, however, of Wairarapa prevented a score. McGuire and McMaster each scored' a try, and E. McKenzie kicked a goal from a mark. Walker scored for the homo team. The Hawke’s Bay team which goes on tour on the 20th inst. will be very much stronger than the fifteen which met the Wairarapa team. [A telegram despatched on Saturday morning stated :—Tho outlook for the Wairarapa-Hawke’s Bay representative match is very gloomy. Heavy rain fell during the night, and set in again at about 10 this morning, with every prospect of continuing. This unfavorable turn will greatly lessen the local team’s chance of victory, the visitors being a heavy combination,]
