Walter Richmond, a farmer, was committed for trial to-day on a charge of attempting to prevent a witness from giving evidence against him in a sheep-stealing case on the 20th June last by issuing a threat.'

Wellington, last night. Mr F. Franklin, at one time treasurer of the Wellington Racing Club, has died here, at the age of 66. Dunedin, last night. Albert Smith, a partner in McGavin’s brewery, aged about 40 years, shot himself fatally last night. William Batty, aged 19, accidentally shot and killed himself when out rabbiting near Berwick.

At the City Council meeting several Councillors at last night’s meeting declared that in all their experience they had never seen the streets of the city in snch a bad state of disrepair. The streets of Wellington were referred to by the Mayor as immeasurably superior to those of this city. The City Engineer proposed drastic measures for their repair. A motion to grant the use of tho Triangle rotunda and other reserves to the city bands, after some discussion, was carried. One or two Councillors thought there was too much of this sort of thing. The majority, however, thought the time would come when the city would have its own paid band, the same as the London County Council.
