TEMPERANCE ADVOCATE.

A CLERGYMAN CROSS-EXAMINED.

; Mr William Richardson, the well-known prohibitionist, has been creating a stir in Sydney. His disturbance of the tran- [ quility of the Pitt-street Congregational Church resulted in his appearance at the Central Criminal Court. The defendant conducted his own case, and did so with remarkable coolness, according to the Sydney Daily Telegraph. In cross-ex-amining the Rev. T. DunstaD, he asked if there were any respectable hotels in the Kingdom of Heaven. “Do you not pray, 1 Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven'?’ Did not your Master, with a whip of knotted cords, drive out the money - changers from the Temple—and was that not an interruption '? Was it worshipping God to make an attack on the Inspector-General of Police ? Did Christ or His disciples send men to gaol when their services were interrupted?" And so on. Mr ActingJustice Pring rebuked the defendant whenever he was irrelevant, but without effect. Mr Richardson persevered with unswerving zeal to the end. Three times the jury returned to the court, and six hours’ wrestling with the problem submitted to them brought unanimity no nearer. His Honor, after sundry explanations, accordingly handed them over to the custody and hospitality of the officials for the night, and committed Mr Richardson to the paternal charge of the Sheriff, i Next morning saw the jury no nearer an : agreement, and they were then discharged and the accused bound over in his own recognisance of £-10 to appear for trial when called upon.
