OBITUARY.

DEATH OF MR J. B. MACKIE

We regret to record the death of Mr John Barr Mackie, father of Mr William Maekie, engineer, of Gisborne, which took place at the Gisborne Hospital yesterday. Mr Mackie arrived from the South a little over twelve months ago, coming to Gisborne in order to be with his son, and also for the improvement of his health. I He had enjoyed fairly good health in Gisborne until last week, but on Saturday last he was admitted to the Hospital, suffering from acute inflammation of the lungs and pleurisy. Everything that was possible was done for him, but he gradually grew worse, and passed quietly away yesterday morning. Deceased, who was in his sixty-seventh year, had been in New Zealand for upwards of forty-six years. He came out to the colony in the ship Dunbar Castle, and for many years resided in Dunedin, where he was engaged in business as a modeller. He was one of the first to go to the Dunstan golddiggings, and was also engaged in the mining industry in other parts of the South Island. He leaves a family of four, two sons and two daughters. One of the sons, Mr William Mackie, has been a resident of Gisborne for some years, and a great deal of sympathy will be felt for him in his sad bereavement. The remains of deceased will be taken to Dunedin for interment.
