NEAV ZEALAND OFFICIALS TO GO DOAVN.
[By Telegraph Press Association.] Auckland, last night. Mr Percy Smith, late Surveyor-General, arrived to-day from New Plymouth, and sails this week in the Government schooner Countess of Kanfurly for tho South Sea Islands. lie goes to Raratonga to see Colonel Gudgeon, the British Resident, and then, acting under the Colonel’s instructions, goes to Niue, where he is to remain for a couple of months or so in order to inaugurate a new system of Government. On arriving at Niue Mr Tercy Smith will present to King Tongia, on behalf of tho Governor, a goid metal from tho Duko of Cornwall, similar to those presented to tho high chiefs of New Zealand and Cook Islands. Mr Smith expects to get back to New Zealand in about four months’ time. Mr Colebrook, of H.M. Customs staff, leaves by the Government schooner Countess of Ranfurly for the South Sea Islands on business in connection with tho establishment of Customs duties in the British - owned islands at which tho schooner calls.
