Amalgamation.

(To the Editor of the Times.) Sik,—-Mr Frank Harris and others may i think it good sport to attack the Chair- i man of the Whataupoko Hoad Board, ' because that gentleman does not hurriedly • throw in his lot with the any-price ainalgamationists : but I hold that he is adopting the proper policy by seeking to have everything fairly put before the ratepayers. He was too much for Mr Lysnar when he “ cornered ” that gentleman on what ought to have been the latter's strongest point, his knowledge of the law. Mr Lysnar was quite willing to pose as a heaven-born financier, and some of us might have been tempted to take him at his own valuation, but directly it came to a point of the, law he showed wonderful alacrity in agreeing to an adjournment. Tne strongest appeal yet made for amalgamation was to uiy mind that made through the columns of the Times by Captain Ferris, but tlie effect of it was to some extent spoilt by his statement at the meeting that the ratepayers under £SOO could get water, drainage, and amalgamation for no extra rate. Surely that is not a moral ground to stand upon ? Someone would have to pay, and ] whv should a rich suburb desire to dc-P*- d on‘the charity of the “parent *•---1.,V 1 ., as Mr Harris so apth; ' terms u '> A ° ' tQ r hatruiai 1 , men of the temperament Cu Mr Harris may like to have a shy at him, as some lawyers would like to shy at an impartial Judge of the Supreme Court, but it makes no difference to the fairness of the Judge, and tends to increase him in the esteem of the people with a sense of responsibility. Mr Harris ought to keep quiet for a while longer after the j'fttay Mr Stafford bowled him out.—l am, etc., Independent.
