A RECENT WRECK.
Particulars were received by the R.M.S. Miowcra of the loss of the erstwhile Orient liner_ Lusitania, off the coast of Si. John’s, Newfoundland. The steamer was wrecked near Cape Ballard whilst i bound from Liverpool to Montreal, in charge of Captain McKay. The Lusitania ’ 'vas proceeding round Capo Race for - Montreal, with a largo cargo and a ship- | ment of passengers. She mistook her - course in a dense fog, and went ashore ; near Renews, twenty miles north of ■ Cape Race, before daybreak. The ship • ran oyer a reef. The passengers, mostly immigrants, were panic-stricken. They ' stampeded, and fought for the boats, but were overcome by the officers and crew, who secured control after a prolonged struggle with the rougher element among the passengers, M'ho used knives. The u'omen and children were landed first, and the men followed. The crow stood by the ship. The passengers state that the first knouledgo which they had of the disaster was u'lien, owing to the ship rasping over the rocks, they were all hurled from their beds by the shock. Many of them were bruised, and they all hurried on deck in their night clothes. A scene of great excitement ensued. I'ive hundred people Mere clamoring to escape, while the crew tried to pacify them, and launch the boats. The male passengers in their attempt to seize the boats trampled the women under foot, and fought the crew with knives. Some of the more clear-headed "of the passengers assisted the creiv in their efforts to get out the boats. The last reports rereeeived stated that the steamer M'a9 breaking-up.
