j . Mr Llewellyn Smith, district surveyor, j is at present at Tolago Bay surveying ' a site for the bridge across the Uawa river. Mr G. W. Sampson, Chief Postmaster, leaves for the South to-morrow on a fortnight’s leave of absence. Mr W. 11. 0. Johnstone, who has boon acting as Judge at the Poultry Show, returns to Auckland to-morrow. Mr D. D. Hyde, Government Poultry Expert, arrives from Wellington this morning, and will give a lecture at the Theatre Royal this evening. Bro. A. G. Wheeler, P.G., of the Star of Gisborne Lodge, has boon elected a life member as a mark of appreciation for services rendered in the cause of Oddfellowship in Gisborne.

Detective Henderson leaves for Auckland by tlio Elingamite this morning. A number of his friends met at the Masonic Hotel yesterday, and presented him with a handsome case of hair-brushes and a chased silver matchbox. A pleasant hour was spent, and general regret was expressed Ht Detective Henderson’s departure.

Our Waikato correspondent telegraphed last evening:—The funeral of the late Mrs Smith, mother of Messrs G. and C. Smith, of Gisborne, was largely attended this afternoon. Deceased was one of the original settlers in Hamilton, and was universally respected. She leaves a grown up family to mourn her loss. Dr. Wei by Fisher, who is to take charge of Dr. Hughes' practice during that gentleman’s absence in London, arrives by the Elingamite this morning. Dr. Fisher arrived in Sydney from London by the P. and 0. Company’s R.M.S. Australia iast Thursday week, and came on to Gisborne via the Bluff. Dr. Hughes intends leaving for London on August 10th, and will be absent iron) Gisborne for abouttwelvo months.
