Volcanic Eruption in Java.
Nows was received in Sydney by the steamer Changsha, from the East, of a volcanic eruption in Java, involving the loss of several lives and much damage. The volcano Ivloeth, after ii period of twenty-five years’ inactivity, suddenly struck terror into the hearts of residents in its vicinity by issuing a slow, "grumbling sound, which gradually increased to a roar, resembling the sound of big guns. Heavy showers of stones almost immediately began to fall and -the sky became intensely dark; To add to the terror of the scene, the air became filled with sand and ashes. The residents became panic stricken, foaring that the end of the world had come. The forest at the base of Kloeth was set on fire by the burning lava which flowed from the crater down the mountain side. The fire spread to the plantations, and in turn consumed the estates. An assistant on one of the estates, in attempting to thread his way through the darkness, was overtaken by the flames, and so severely burned that ho succumbed to his injurios. Two children, their nurse, and housekeeper, were drowned in attempting to ford a stream swollen by tlio eruption.
