Napier-Gisborne Railway.
(To the Editor of the Times.) Sir, —Owing to the urgent need in this district for a railway from Xapier to Gisborne, the Wairoa Railway League have asked me to forward this petition to you with the request that you would aid this important movement by signing the petition yourself and also getting others to do so. You would greatly help in this matter by canvassing in your locality and getting everybody aged 18 years and over to sign it. As it is necessary that the signatures should bo obtained at once, it will be deemed a favor if you would make a special effort on this occasion, and return the documents to me so as to reach me not later than Tuesday, 6th August. This leaves two weeks in which to get signatures. Your favor will be greatly esteemed.—Y'ours faithfully', David \Vhyte, jd.vr., lion. Sec. to the Wairoa Eaihvay League. Wairoa, July 13th, 1901.
[ The petition shows that the line of route lies through fertile country to a great extent suited to close settlement ; the district is specially suitable for dairying, fruitgrowing, and fattening purposes ; the route lies through limestone country from which the Cook and Wairoa Counties could obtain metal ; the route skirts large areas of heavily timbered country ; the districts presents the follow-
ing attractions to tourists and health-seekers : Morerc Hot Springs, Waikarcmoana Lake, Te Reinga Falls, Tiniroto Lake, boating and fishing on Wairoa river, rivers stocked with trout, and door thriving on the hills at the lake. The petition asks that a sum be placed on the Estimates for commencing a railway.
