The Post Oilice authorities have received advice that the mails which left Auckland by the Sierra on the loth June arrived at London on the afternoon of the 17tli insfc., four days late. The Wellington Harbor Hoard, at its last meeting, decided to becqtne its own* insurer, but to-day it resolved to insure its employees in one of the accident insurance oHiees.
The railway trallie returns for the month (Mulin'' June 22 shows, as compared with the corresponding period of last year, an increase of 211,991 passengers, and ls;i7() of revenue.
In the hotel Commonwealth ease the Chief Justice expressed the opinion that what had been done amounted to an evasion of the laws, hut was not met by the express words of the statute ; also, that there must he a vacant, license at the time of hearing, and that requirements as to accommodation must be complied with. This was not done, and the licenses should be quashed. The other Judges took a different view, and held that the circumstances did not amount to a removal with the meaning of the Act ; that it was sullii-ient if the license was actually •trailted, and if the premises are complete by tiic time license is issued. The motion was dismissed with costs .£,">o. Notice of appeal was given. The Court adjourned to August Utli. The trouble between the captain and crew of the Beacon Hock as to food culminated this moraine in the men refusing duty. The shipping master of the port is to receive a deputation from the crew this afternoon..
The appeal. Commissioner of Trade and Customs v. Hell and Co., match manufacturers, -was dismissed with costs on the highest scale. Court was of opinion that guilty knowledge must Lie shown before seizure and forfeiture. From this Mr Justice Williams dissented, in Hooker v. Morris, affecting the legality of the Collector of Tolls at the Omnia toll-gate, Taranaki, the appeal was dismissed by a majority of the Court, who held that no illegality was shown. Mr J ustiee Edwards dissented.
