°THE YLANKFONTEIN AFFAIR. KILLING OF WOUNDED. REPORT NOT AUTHENTICATED. HOW STEYN ESCAPED. Bv Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright London, July 18. Mr Bennett Burleigh, correspondent of the London Daily Telegraph, states that the killing of wounded at Vlankfoutein is not well authenticated. The outrage was evidently the work of one or two Boors. The Standard’s Pretoria correspondent says that Steyn was asleep when licitz was surprised. He escaped in his nightshirt, and jumped on a horse. The riflemen fired at him, but unfortunately missed. Capetown, July IS. Sir Gordon Sprigg, addressing the Vigilance Committee, said the situation at tho Cape was brighter than at any time during the war. Communications were passing between Lord Kitchener and the Cape Ministry, and the result, lie hoped, would end the warfare. It hail been impossible to summon burgher forces, as the Dutch were untrustworthy, and were often rebels 1 at heart.
