The members of the Fifth Contingent presented Surgeon-Captain Thomas with a cutlery and plate cabinet and silver spirit-stand, and the officers gave him a marble clock and silver cigar-case. The gifts were meant as an acknowledgment of his services in South Africa, especially in his fight with fever in Beira.
