AN EPIDEMIC OF SCARLATINA. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Wellington, last night. For some time past Wellington has been experiencing an epidemic of scarlatina. The epidemic is not peculiar to any particular portion of the city, but seems to be general. The hospital fever ward has been full for some time. The Mayor has offered to place the plague hospital at the disposal of the authorities for the overflow eases.

FAREWELL TO MAJOR MADOCKS. Major Madocks, who has completed five years of service with the Defence Department, left this morning for Auckland on route for America and England. He was entertained at dinner last night at the Wellington Club, and presented with a draft for a substantial sum by the Polo Club. THE SIERRA. The Sierra, with English mails to June 29, left San Francisco on Thursday, due date.
