LYING STATEMENTS.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Auckland, last night.
Jessie Minns, scullery maid at the Grand Hotel, has admitted to the police that her sensational story of three men burning down the hotel with powder and a fuse, and threatening to kill her if sho gave warning of their purpose, is an entire fabrication. She took the whole story from a novelette entitled “Fredand the Miner,” the idea being to shield three former employees whom she saw on the night of the lire with the night porter. The mother of the girl Minns, interviewed, said the girl had admitted that the whole story, including the powder and fuse, the nicknames of the men, and their descriptions, were taken from the same novelette. The girl complained that the police tried to put words into her mouth, and she decided to stuff the SubInspector.
