GISBORNE PACING CLUB. STEEPLECHASE MEETING. Sk'. uxli Day. Tiik Steeplechase Meeting of the Gisborne Pacing Club was brought to a conclusion at To Hapara yesterday. The weather was fine for the first three races, but during the latter part of the afternoon turned out very wc-t. The attendance was large, and speculation was brisk, the sum of .£3680 being passed through the machine, making a total of X 6290 for the meeting. The field were sent on their journey to an even start, and when they settled down to their work the colors of The Gryphon I could he seen in front, whilst Sylvanus, | who was next the rails, occupied a handy position. This pair led past the stand, their nearest! attendants being Straybird and Scallywag, whilst Voltiguer and Merry 1 toy brought up the rear. Sylvanus dashed to the front as they swept along the avenue, and Straybird could be seen improving his position. The Wanderer gelding was upon terms with The Gryphon as the back stretch was entered upon, bill at the home turn Mr Hood's gelding fell back. Sylvanus had a length’s lead of Straybird as they raced to the last hurdle, and taking the obstacle in good style won comfortably by a length and ahalf, The Gryphon being third, and Scallywag fourth. The field were bunched as they raced along the back stretch, and as Malcolm was well up on the leaders the victory of the topweight was loudly proclaimed. Ballinger, however, was not to be caught napping, and drawing away from his opponents in the run down the straight, won easily by three lengths. 009 Vathek was first away, followed by Papatu, Admiral Hawke, and Gipsy Queen. In this order they raced along the back, where Gipsy Queen ran up to the leaders. She soon disposed of Vathck, but met with a tough customer in Papatu. The pair raced down the straight under punishment, and as they wore almost on terms, the chances of success of Gipsy Queen were very hopeful. Papatu, however, was not to bo denied, and, gamely answering the calls of his rider, the Crackshot gelding lasted long enough to gain a victory by a short half length. Time 1.85 3-5, div. £3 13s. 414 Kowhai and Tarragon made the running for the first mile, Straybird being third, Scallywag fourth, and Cronje sixth. After passing the stand the second time Scallywag and Straybird went to the front, whilst Cronje also improved his position. Straybird had all the best of the Napier representative in the run along the back, and taking the last two hurdles in good stylo, won easily by two lengths, Kowhai being third, and Cronje fourth, Time, 6.44. •114 Ballinger made the running to the sod wall, where he fell, leaving Peter Osbcck in command, with Sailor as bis nearest attendant. Papatu was first away, closely followed by Gipsy Queen and Unique, whilst Admiral Hawke and Don were last to move. Admiral Hawke improved his position in the run along the back stretch, but did not got on terms with Papatu until the straight was entered. A good finish resulted, and the Nelson gelding gradually wearing down the local horse in the last furlong, won by half a length. Div., £3 6s. A protest was entered against the winner on the grounds of inconsistent running, and a lengthly enquiry was held by the stewards, resulting in the protest being dismissed. The dividend on Admiral Hawke will be paid to ticket-holders at the Masonic Hotel at 10 o’clock this morning.
