The mail agent reports that the Ventura arrived at 'Frisco a day late, consequent on a damaged cylinder. The mails were dispatched bv train the same day, timed to connect with the Campania, which was specially selected for the New Zealand mails. The train broke down between Chicago and New York, and the. Campania could not wait, on account of the tide. Consequently there was a further delay at New York of three days. The Sonoma's voyage to Auckland occupied 18 days 1 hour 51 minutes. Owing to tho strike of ironworkers in San Francisco, certain repairs required by the Sonoma were not completed, and the high-pressnre cylinder of the port engine is still in a bad condition, The damage will, if possible, be repaired in Sydey. j Tliis defect, in addition to the seventeen | hours' stay in Honolulu, and strong S.Vi. i winds during the latter part of tho voyage, i accounts for the length of the trip, There were no cases cf plague at ’Frisco or Honolulu when the Sonoma left. The I mails are expected to reach Wellington to-morrow afternoon.
