5 Tin: annual social in connection with tin Turanganui Lodge of Druids was lick' . last evening in the Theatre Itoynl, nnc i was a most unqualified success. The at- : tendance was large, upwards of a hundred f and twenty couples being present, and one and all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. 1 The interior of tho hall was gaily dc- ; coratcd with tlags and hunting, mirrors, . etc., and presented a most pleasing api pcarance, whilst the stage was transi formed into a drawing-room. An interesting feature of the evening was the introi ductiou of the opening ceremony of tiie i Lodge, which was most effectively given. The hall was darkened for the purpose, and the use of colored lights greatly enhanced the picturesque scene. The arrangements for the social were of a most complete kind, and reflected great credit upon the committee, which consisted of the following gentlemen : —Bros. A. Wade, 11. .Miller, P. Greaves, D. McKenzie, J. Franklin, J. Dower, W. West, T. G. Lawless, D. Cameron, F. Ferguson, J. Lucas, .T. Smith, J. Nutting, J. C. Griffin, 11. Ale Kay, F. Harris, P. Maher, J. Little, J. Eaton, C. Nield, J. Thomson, J. Edwards, E. Walls, T. Sweet, C. Noonan, J. Colley. M. Craig, and J. Georgeson. Pros. T. J. Spiers, A. Sawyer, 11. D. Bean, and 11. Johnston discharged the duties of M.C.’s in a most satisfactory manner. Excellent music was provided by Mrs Fernandez (piano), and Vowles (violin). The catering in the hands of Mr J. Craig loft nothing to' be desired, the viands being of tho choicest. A presentation of | diplomas took place during the evening, I Uro. H. D. Bean being tho recipient of a I P.D.P. diploma, whilst Bros. .J. Eaton I and.!. Dower got P.A. diplomas. Tho presentation was made in each case by A.D. Bro. P. Mailer, who was most happy in his remarks in referring to the services rendered by the gentlemen receiving the diplomas. Tho floor was in very good order, and dancing was kept up till an early hour this morning, To the lion. Secretary, Mr H. J. Burns, in a great measure is due the success of the gathering, and he was most painstaking in his efforts to promote the success of the social, which was admitted by all present to have been one of the best yet held.
The team to represent Huia juniors on Saturday next will bs picked from the following :—Garrett, Tungaroa, Bayly, Thomson, Golding, Gibson, Gcrrard, Tapu, Herewinia, Morris, aioiii, GoeKery, Bepia, Scott, Albert, Mason, McCullough, •Jones, Shcrratt, Hail, and Sharp (2). Visitors to Gisborne for the S teeplochase meeting should pay a call ’ at Mr Sam Earle’s fancy goods shop and hair dresser’s saloon. Anything in the way of pipes, tobacco, of cigarettes are obtainable at Mr Earle’s shop, where tho best brands only arc kept. In the hair-dress-ing saloon, there arc two chairs, so that customers can be promptly attended to.
