ANOTHER AUCKLAND SENSATION.

A DOCTOR CHARGED WITH MURDER, (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Auckland, last night. Dr Wilkins has been arrested ani charged with the murder of Mary O'Dowc in connection with the abortion case [The jury returned a verdict to tin effect that death was due to blood poison ing, the result of external agency, bu there was not sufficient evidence to prove by whose agency it was caused.] Later.—This afternoon Detectives Grace and Herbert arrested Dr Jno. Wilkins in Shortland street, and charged him that ho did on or about the 17th day of May murder Mrs Mary O’Dowd, the inquest on whoso death terminated yesterday. At tho inquest the Coroner, in summing up, after going through all tho evidence, quoted Section 201 of tho Criminal Code to tho effect that a person procuring abortion was liable to imprisonment for life, and concluded his address to tho jury as follows :—“ Your verdict will bo one of two. It will be a verdict of murder if you are satisfied by the evidence, because if a person does an illegal act without the slightest intention of causing death, but some person dies as the result of that illegal act, tho person who committed the act is held by law to be guilty of murder. But if you arc not satisfied that there is sufficient evidence as to how the fatal blood-poisoning came about you can so return your verdict, and I may toll you this, that whatever your verdict may bo, it is quite competent for the Crown to take this matter into another Court.”
