The monthly mooting of the Hospital Trustees takes place to-night. The hounds meet at the Waikanae at 9 to-morrow morning, There will bo a hare hunt. A change of advertisement for the J “ Kia-ora ” Butter Factory appears in j this issue, and is well worth perusal. Captain Edwin reported yesterday : “ North-east to east and south gale ; heavy rain ; heavy sea ; glass fall ; indictions of floods.” Acceptances for tho first day of the Steeplechase meeting arc to be in by 9 this evening. Entries for the Maiden Hack and Hack Handicap events will also be received to-night. Owners of two strange dogs 'arc advertised for. Stubbs and Co. have several fino properties advertised in this issue. In another column “ Jack Plane ” advertises for a workshop with frontage to Gladstone Road, between Cobdeu and Peel-streets. Messrs Lethaby and Sons, umbrella and walking-stick manufacturers, of Dunedin, who have branches in all the leading centres, are now turning .their attention to Gisborne, and have taken temporary premises in Gladstone road, opposite the Salvation Army barracks. Every class of work in connection with the trade is executed, and the tirm supply a single umbrella at wholesale price. They should meet with a litrge measure of support in Gisborne. Mr Foster, manager of the New Zealand Estates Company's properties, returns to M cllington this evening. His visit to this district has apparently been productive of much good, and there is every probability that the hopo expressed by us last week, that his visit would result in something definite being done in connection with the Carroll-Wi Pere trust estates, will be realised. It will be seen by advertisement in another column that the Bank is giving notice to realise under its mortgage. This will bo welcomo news to the settlers generally, and should tend to the speedy settlement of the land. The pro perties comprise various classes of land some excellently adapted for close settle merit, and some which will no doubt b( thrown opon in larger areas, as being mori suitable for sheep-farming. A meeting of the Gisborne School Committee was held last evening, when there was a full attendance of members. The Headmaster reported that there had boon a good average attendance at the school prior to the winter vacation, but- since resuming the wet weather had affected tho attendance. Some discussion took place with regard to the application made through tho Board to tho Educational Department for a special grant for tho district High School, and the matter was finally referred to a sub-committee to report. There were eleven applicants for the position of assistant-master, rendered vacant by- the resignation of Mr A. Cuthbert. These were considered in committee, and Mr T. B. Strong, of Tcmuka, South Canterbury, was recommended to tho Board for appointment. Mr 'Strong has excellent credentials, and tho Committee were unanimous in making tho selection.
