Defence of Gibraltar.
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright London, June 29. In the course of an interview with Sir Chas. Clarke, the Victorian AgentGeneral deprecated the large expenditure on the defences of Gibraltar. He said it would be better to improve the navy, placing it on a war footing, and to fortify the ports of the north of England and the Clyde. The newspapers, commenting on the Gibraltar Committee's report, recall what occurred in connection with the defence of the island of Alderney, and advise the Government to observe extreme caution in dealing with Gibraltar.
