WHATAUPOKO ROAD BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Board was held last night. Present: Messrs A. F. Matthews (Chairman), Lysnar, Ovr, Sievwright, and Captain Ferris. Mr J. T. Griffon approached the Board, and complained about the drain near his property, Mangapapa. He stated that the drain had not been cleaned out for six years, the effect being that the property was Hooded. The Chairman promised that the matter would be looked into. He said that it would require a miniature canal to provide for the large body of water that had been diverted that way. It was resolved that the Chairman and Messrs Orr and Lysnar be deputed to inspect the locality, with power to authorise an expenditure up to iJo. A petition was received from Messrs Garrett, Searle, Ferris, Doleman, Skipworth and Alyward, complaining of the state of a piece of road between Fox and Stafford, streets, towards the Waimata river. Captain Ferris said that Mr Doleman bad informed him that the work would cost about ;£S. N'->>. Air Orr said the street was an 'important one, and the whole street should be formed. There had been about a thousand pounds’ worth of property put up there within six months, and there should be a like sum within the next six months. The Chairman said the work would cost about i£l a chain, but it would be a great mistake to form any street unless they were prepared to metal it, as the sand was blown about. Mr Sievwright: I doubt if we have the funds. Mr Lysnar : There is quite enough to do what is asked. The Chairman saidhe would be inclined about September to have formation and metalling done at a cost of about £3O. Air Orr pressed [for the whole street being done, but was faced with the question, Where are the funds to come from ? i It was resolved, on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Air Sievwright, that Whitaker street be formed and metalled from Stafford street to Fox street, l prior to September.. i A statement of the finances was laid on • the table by the Clerk. On the motion - of Mr Sievwright, seconded by MrUysnsufi

it was resolved that the Chairman and Captain Ferrv and Mr Orr be a Finance Committee. The following tenders were received for cleaning out drains: —R. Bryant, Is 9d per chain ; Con Dooling, Is 6d (informal); - C. Clarke, Is Id; M. O’Connor, Is; J. - Foster and Co., lid. The tender of ■ Messrs Foster and Co. was accepted, on i the motion of Mr Sievwright, seconded i by Mr Lysnar. The Chairman said that i his estimate was Is 6d; last year they had been done for 9d per chain, but it would cost more after rain. At the suggestion of Mr Lysnar, who said that Air AVinter Hamon was at his own expense forming the footpath near his new house, in Clifford and Fox streets, the Chairman was authorised to have some shingle placed on the footpath if he thought it advisable. It was decided to reply to Air Hall and others that tho Board could not interfere with the county drain, but would have the side drain attended to. The question as to when tho annual meeting of ratepayers would be held was raised by Air Lysnar. The Clerk said that he would be prepared with the information when the valuation roll was received from Weilington. Mr Lysnar said they should have the meeting as soon as the information was available. The Chairman agreed that the meeting should be held as soon as possible, but said it would be futile to hold the meeting before the roll had been received. ' On the motion of Air Lysnar, seconded 1 by Captain Ferris, it was resolved that the Chairman and Messrs Sievwright and Lysnar be a committee to fix the date of the meeting as soon as possible after the receipt of information. On the motion of Air Sievwright, seconded by All- Orr, it was resolved that steps I bo taken as usual to strike the general rate, and to levy the special rate required. It was resolved, on tho motion of Air Lysnar, to have the culvert near Air Clayton's place at Alangapapa attended to.
