HAAVKE’S BAY JOCKEY CLUB.
SECOND DAY. RECORD MEETING. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Napier, last night. The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club were again favored with gloriously fine weather for the second day of their winter meeting. The attendance was phenomenally large, the gate receipts constituting a record for a winter" meeting. The racing was good, and in the principal event, the Ilawkc's Bay Steeplechase, Muifaa once again proved what a great horse he is by winning under the tidy impost of 13st. The field, however, was not a strong one, and when AVaitio ran round it removed the only opponent from whom danger was to be apprehended. The sum of .£■{B72 was invested on the totes, making a total of .£9083 for the two days, that being X 1062 in excess of the same meeting last year. The following arc the results :
Hunters' Handicap Hurdles, I t miles. 9,7 Rhodes’ The Phantom, Bodvin ... 1 180 Risely’s Loehade, Scott ... ~ 88 Neagle’s K Jam, Neaglo 8 Also started : 50 Pistol Shot, 72 Ilakownctu, 20 The Sprite, 20 St Louis, -18 Garnet, The Infant. Stockade was the first to show, with the Infant and K Jam next. After settling flown, K Jam and the Phantom took the running. Passing the stand the Infant had a slight lead of Hakowhetu, while K Jam and the Phantom wore lying side by side. At the back the Phantom and K Jam were lighting for the lead, anti raced up to the hurdle at the top of the turn, all the horses being bunched by this time. Here St Louis, Garnet, and The Sprite cam • down. At the last fence the Phantom was first over, with K Jam and Luchado together, while Pistol Shot camo flown. I’Yom this out the Phantom came out, and won easily from Loehade by three lengths, with K Jam third. Time, 11.2 2-5. Div., X 5 19s. Ladies' Necklace, LI miles. 17* Sargent’s Tirea, Christy 1 64 Campbell’s Tahokc, Gordon ... 2 •11 Johnston’s Muskctoon, Johnston 3 Also started—llo7 Ilormirius, 37 The Count, 4 1 Andromeda, 12 Thu Sprite, 112 The Jester, 11 Cossack. Tirea and Cossack took up the running, with .Muskctoon and Andromeda along- ' Ic. Passing the stand Cossack was in fi ait, with Tirea, Andromeda, and The ■l' iter next. At the back of the course 9 ea anil Andromeda were in front again. In the straight Tirea camo away, and from this point the race was never in doubt, Tirea winning easily by half a dozen lengths from Tahokc, with Muskctoon third. Time 2.71, div. XU 12s.

Kauri Gum led the field over tho first jump, followed l>y Waitio, Venture, Moifaa, and Waterport. At the water-jump in front of the stand, Kauri Gum rose badly, and before he negotiated tho obstacle Moifaa, Waitio, and Venture were in front of him. At the double at tho hack of tho course, all wore hunched, with the exception of the favorite, who lay about two Jengths in the rear; but he was soon up with them, and at the sod well uas ft couple of lengths in front of Waitio. with Kauri Gum and Venture next. At tlie water-jump, Waitio was in front of Moifaa, with Kauri Gum next, and Venture soirio listanco away. At the double at tho back of tho course, AVaitio and Moifaa were sovoral lengths in front of their field, while Waterport stopped. From this to the tloublo brush in front of the stand, Waitio and Moifaa wore continually changing plaeo. However, Waitio ran through the gap between the. second hurdle anil the fonco in front of Ihe stand, while Kauri Gum stopped. This left only two remaining, Moifaa and Venture, but, as there was fully a quarter of a mile between the pair, nothing but an accident could have prevented the favorite from winning. Fortunately for tlie good horse, and straight and popular owner, and also the betting public, the unforeseen did not occur, and Moifaa was etimied winner of tho Hawke's Bay . ,'iioepleehasc of 1901. There was much cheering on tlie winner returning to tho scales. Venture was tho only other horse to finish, being about tho length of tho straight belaud. Time 4.3 4-5. Div. XI ,12s. Hunters’ Handicap Steeplechase, about 2.1 miles. 145 Xeaglc’s K Jam, Neaglo ... 1 148 Kislcy’s Loehade, Scott ... ... 2 Also started : 26 I’istol Shot, 40 To Rehuiiga, 129 Tho Phantom, 27 Hokowlictu, 27 Fitzlcc. 1C Jam and Loclmdc were the only two that finished. llokowhetu came down opposite tho stand on tlie first time round. Pistol Bitot refused tho water, and To Rolumga ran off. Tho Phantom held a commanding position until the straight was reached, where IC Jam and Lochado closed on the leader. Tho lust feneo settled the Phantom’s chance, and a good finish resulted in a length’s victory for K Jam. Time, 5.26 1-5, Div., X 3 7s. Hand.cap Hurdles, ij miles. 112 Adeline's Duffer, Watt 1 32 Gib on's Hautonga , ... ... 2 72 Ferguson’s Stockade, Cirnot ... 3 Also started : 99 Social Test, 249 Evening Wonder, 216 Bush Rose. The Duller jumped oil with tho lead, and next to him was Social Pest. Stockade, and Bush Rose. Tlie Duffi took tho field-along at a merry pace, aid won from start to finish, Hautonga icing second, and Stockade third. Time, 3.24 1-5. Div., XG 3s. Final Steeplechase, about 2 miles. 203 Morrison's Scallywag, MLchcll ... 1 161 Adeane’s Stanley. Watt 2 89 Connop's Rhino. Kedmonl ... 3 Also started : 223 Waitb. AVaitio fell at the sod wall the- second .intoround, when holding a loading position with Scallywag. The latter had a gnoil advantage when turning for home, and.although Stanley put in a challenge, if vas of no use, the son of Turquoise being still full of running, and winning by three lengths. Time, 4.17 2-5. Dividend, X2 19s.

From a splendid start Lady's Link, Kuamahunga and Tigress wen prominent for the lirst five furlongs, when Kobin Adair put in a challenge round to the turn, while Terror was occupying fourth position. Entering the straight Kuatnahunga was in front, and Tigress and Lady's Link foil back. Here lvobin Adair put in a- challenge and soon had the leaders done with at the second stand. Loud voices proclaimed him the winner, but it was not for long, as the son of Dreadnought was now putting in some sonic solid work, and .it was a picture to see how the little horse settled down to his stride. At the 'lawn fence he was up with Robin Adair, and passed the post winner by about a length, without the whip, from Kobin Adair, while Euainaliunga was about the same distance away third.
