In the House of Lords, Lord Selbourne stated that the oommitteo appointed to enquire into tho defence of Gibraltar had reported that the western docks were more open to land fire than the eastern side. They recommended a modificati a of the western work, tho construction of a harbor, dock, workshops, and coaling facilities at a cost of at least five millions. The steamer Lusiania, at one time engaged in the Australian mail service, while voyaging from Liverpool to Montreal, went ashoro at Capo Ballard. Newfoundland. Fivo hundred passengers aboard were saved. Tho Lusiania is a hopeless wreck. Tho rougher element of the passengers bocamo panic-stricken and tried to rush the boats, using knives. Paris, June 28. One hundred and ten auto-mobiles started in the race from Paris to Berlin. M. Fournier, on a Mors’ car, roached Aux la Chappolle, a distance of 252 miles, in 508 minutes. At the sheep show Mr McCaughey took the grand prize for tho champion ram and ewe in the merino sections, dividing tho champions with Messrs Horsfall and Gibson. Hobart, Juno 28. Lord Ilopetouu and suite arrived by the Warrimoo, in readiness to receive the Royal visitops. The Governor-General was warmly welcomed by thousands. The stroets wore gaily decorated, and ho was escorted to Government House by mounted troops. Melbourne, Juno 28. The House carried a motion in favor of the establishment of a National Department of Agriculture on American lines. In tho Senate, Mr Best was elected Chairman of Committees. The House adopted a motion in favor of making provision in Government contracts for payment of a minimum wage, and fixing the maximum hours of labor, tho wagos to bo in accordance with tho ratos ruling in tho disirict, and that tho Commonwealth Parliament accept full powers to mako laws for Australia as to wages and hours and conditions of labor.
Record Reign is well supported for tho hurdles. Ten to 1 and 8 to 1 nro now offered. Rackstraw is well backed at 10 to 1, and now rules equal favorite with Record Reign.
