Baldwin’s American expedition, comprising the yacht America, and the-sealers Frithjoy and Belgica, will attempt to reach the North Pole via Franz Josef Land. The expedition is provisioned for three years, and will sail directly. Hong Kong, June 26. A German firm has secured a contract for the electric lighting of Pekin. London, Juno 26. In connection with the Cherbourg naval manoeuvres, the scheme of operations is to prevent a junction of forces representing the British Channel and Mediterranean squadrons. Lilly white, arrested in Wellington on a charge of being concerned in the Colchester murder, has .been releasod from custody. * Paris, Juno 26. _ The Army Committee of the French Senate has reported in favor of a reduction of the period of compulsory service to two years. Melbourne, June 27. The Supply Bill, the first legislative enactment of the Commonwealth Parliament, has received Lord Hopetoun’s assent. In the Senate a petition from Tasmania was presented against an alteration of the law in regard to sweeps. It declared that if the present arrangements were altered Tasmania would lose L’20,000 and the Commonwealtli ,£50,000 revenue annually. Mr Findley, the Labor member who was expelled from Parliament because of Ins connection with the paper which published the libel on the King, intends to contest a vacant seat in the Assembly. Perth, June 27. Three West Australian papers of the 16th rc-publishcd the libel against the King from the Irish People. Brisbane, June 25. The Premier considers it questionable if it would be advisable to make further Government advances to the sugar industry in face of Mr Barton’s statement as to colored labor. Hobart, Juno 27. Tho Agent-General has arranged for the sale, to be delivered in South Africa, of sne million seven hundred and forty thousand pounds of jams, and one bunded and iwenty-threo thousand bushels of oats.
