CONCILIATION BOARD.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Auckland, last night. The Conciliation Board met to-day to hear the reference between the Auckland Operative Bakers’ Union and the Auckland Master Bakers. Mr White, in opening the eo.se for the Union, said that the award now asked for was the same, if not less, than the demand in tho Southern towns. From Invercargill to Auckland, the men were now working on tho terms now asked for. Tho demands of the Union were: (1) Nine hours and onehalf shall constitute a day’s labor, including one half-hour for breakfast, and one hour for sponging; (2) Tho rate of wages shall be: Foreman, not less than Til per week; sseond hands, not less than £2 10s per week; and any others, not loss than £2 os per week, all hands to receive dry pay ; (3) Tradesmen not fully competent by reason of .ago or physical weakness may be employed at such wage as may in each case bo settled between the Union and employers. (4) No person shall commence work before 4 a.m., except on Wednesday and Saturday, when he shall not commence before 2 a.m. After the stated hourq are up overtime shall be paid' as follows : Time and a quarter up to half-past five in the afternoon, and time and a half after half-past five in the afternoon, (5) No apprentice shall be allowed to any employer unless two bona fide journeymen be employed—an employer who personally works at the trade shall be considered a journeyman; if four journeymen bo employed, then, and in such case, the employer may employ two apprentices, but in no ease shall the employer employ more than two apprentices. (6) Jobbers shall receive 10s per day of nino hours and a half. (7) Sponging shall cover all public holidays, as expressed in Buie 24 of tho Union. (8) No carter shall be employed in any bakehouse, and the respective positions of a baker and carter shall be kept separate. Preference of employment shall be given to members of the Auckland Operative Bakers’ Union, provided they are able, willing, and competent to do the work required. The clauses were dealt with seriatim. Clauses 137 and 8 were not objected to. The Board will give the award on Monday.
