HAWKE’S BAY JOCKEY CLUB.

A SUCCESSFUL MEETING,

Napier, last night. ’ The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club exi perienced gloriously fine weather for the i opening day of their winter meeting. The > attendance was tho largest the Club have f yet had, and the racing was good. There ■ were no mishaps of any consequence, ) though several spills occurred in the l steeplechase and hurdle events. The sum of .£4212 was invested on tho totalisator, the largest dividend being £2l 15s, on Derringcotto in tho Winter Handicap. Moifaa, tho horo of tho Wanganui and North New Zealand Grand National Steeplechases, added still further to his laurels by carrying 12st to victory in the Hawke's Bay Hurdles in the good time of 3.54. Ho paid his supporters the nice dividend of £3 6s. The following are the results:— Trial Stceplochase, about 2 miles. 235 R. H. Meehanan’s br m Waitio, by Kaiwaka —Ada, 6yrs, 10.13, Hickey 1 58 J. B. Venture, Eau do Vio, and Waitio led over tho first hurdle, and at tho manuka fence Eau do Vio and Venture rose together, Waitio, pulling double, being in third place, with Stanley and To Rehunga noxfc. All successfully negotiated tho sod wall, and from this point Waitio went to tho front. At tho doublo post and rails Eau de Vio camo down, but all tho others jumped splendidly. Venturo and Stanley woro hard at work half a milo from home, trying to got alongside Waitio, but to no purpose. At tho last jump, howover, Stanley got on terms with the leader, and gave promiso of a close finish, but after a few strides the mare came away again, and won by a couple of lengths from Stanley, with Venture half a dozen lengths off, third, To Rehunga last. From a good send-off C.ossack took tho lead, and soon an Indian file was established, as fully two lengths divided each candidate. Cossack maintained his advantage until he entered the straight for tho first timo, with Tirca, Woodthorpo, Mangatai, St. Just, Ronda and Muskctoon next. Passing tho stand Tivea was in front bv threo lengths from Woodthorpo I and St. Just, while Hormanus Wat closing ) up. At tho railway bonl Woodthorpo and Hermanns came through, and wont in pursuit of Tirca, and after a closo contest down tho straight, Woodthorpo got homo comfortably by a length from Hormanus, with Tirca threo lengths away, third, and St. Just next. Tho running was made by Evening Wonder for a good portion of the distance, with Hautonga closo on his quarters. These were the first two past the stand, with Rollor lying next, followed by Social Pest, Scallywag, and Bush Rose. Coeur do Lion cm up badly at the fence near the caretaker’s cottago, and took no further part in the race, being pulled off. Sweeping round the back stretch there was very little change, but as the horses turned into the straight Evening Wonder and Hautonga fell back bcaton, while Rollor took command, Moifaa and Bush Rose both making an effort. Roller had a good lead, and looked all over a winner, but Moifaa came at him just at tho last fence. Landing over tho jump ft little in front, the Auckland Steeplechase winner had Roller settled, and ran in by about two lengths to the good, Bush Rose three lengths away third. Time, 3.54. Nectar took the field along at a merry pace up to tho first jump, at which Fitzlee ran off and Crcnje displaced his rider. This left Nectar and Phantom in tho lead. Coming through the gorse in the straight, Ilakowhetu hung up and displaced his rider, who was applauded for the plucky manner in which he tried to keep his seat. At the double post and rails at the back, the Phantom, K Jam, and Anglo were together, but K Jam had most foot between fences. The double at the ratlw ay bend was safely negotiated, and K Jam Angle, and the Phantom were still lighting out the finish when the last obstaeh was reached. Fruit 9.11, 40 Sir Redvers 9.5, 4 Attellan 9.0. Kissmary and Whitirea carried, on the running with Mongonui and Govt, until the bend for home was reached. Here Kissmary fell behind, and Daphne carried on-the running with Whitirea and Mcngonui. Half-way down the straight old Daphne came right out, and stalling off Whitirea's and Mongonui’s challenge won by a couple'of lengths from Whitirea. Mongonui got third. Time, 1.48. Div., i£6 los.
