MR WITHEFORD POKES FUN AT THE PREMIER.

Auckland, last night. Mr Witheford, M.H.R., presiding at annual meeting of the Salvation Army, said if they could get Mr Seddon to be General of the Salvation Army in New Zealand—(laughter)—and put his energies into social work, the Army would be more beneficial to the colony, and it would bring Mr Seddon more lasting happiness than all he had done for Imperial unity by sending troops to South Africa.
The report on social work showed that .£1445 had beefl spent on social homes in Now Zealand during the year onded March 31st. Over F4OO was spent in Auckland. The total number of cases dealt with during the year was 735. In Wellington a workmen’s hotel had been established, at which 915 beds and 1720 meals had been given in exchange for labor done, while 15,148 beds bad been provided, and 21,140 meals supplied.
