FOOTBALL.
RUGBY UNION,
The usual weekly meeting of tho Poverty Bav Rugby Union was held last evening, Mr H. E. Maude presiding. In connection with the forfeiture of their match, it was decided to write to the captain of the City juniors, asking him to attend the next meeting of the Union and give an explanation. Correspondence was received from the secretary of the Tokomaru Football Club, statiug it was them intention to visit Gisborne if satisfactory terms could be arranged. In order to give them every encouragement, the Union decided to offer them a large percentage of the gate proceeds. In connection with the Union’s ball, encouraging reports were received, especially from the ladies’ committee. The ladies of the district have taken the matter up most enthusiastically. The Secretary stated that Miss Adair had interviewed many of the ladies, and had received great encouragement. In this regard he wished it to be known that had any lady been inadvertently overlooked and desired to assist, Miss Adair would be pleased to hear from them. It was decided to hold the hall on Friday, the 23rd August. Owing to Messrs Williams and Kettle’s woolshed being otherwise engaged, the ball will be held in the Theatre Royal, Mr Kennedy stating that he verymuch regretted being unable to assist the Union as he would have liked. A hearty vote of thanks to Mr Maude for the efficient manner in which he had conducted the meetings during the absence of Mr Miller concluded a most useful meeting
