The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, JUNE 22, 1901.

In an interesting letter which appears in another column this morning the Times is taken to task by Mr Lysnar for having assumed that the question of sito has been disposed of in regard to the water supply. “ I was somewhat concerned,” writes Mr Lysnar, “ about the loading article in your Thursday morning’s paper upon the above subject, counselling your readers that the question raised by me against the Waihirere water scheme had been set at rest by Mr Mestayer, and that the Council should at once proceed to lay the financial position before the public and deal with the financial aspect only.” Now, we have to express our admiration of the tenacity of purpose with which Mr Lysnar keeps at a subject which he bus taken in hand for the good of the public, and we should be sorry to airily dismiss any subject in the manuer he seems to suppose ha 3 been done in this case. But tho fact is that Mr Lysnar is under a misapprehension. Our words were : “ The special message received by the Times yesterday sets at rest tho point raised by Councillor Lysnar as to whether or not Mr Mestayer had taken into account tho nature of the foundation of the dam or reservoir. We have now tho confident declaration of Mr Mestayer that there is nothing in the objection raised by Mr Lysnar. There is another stago which should now he arrived at. We would suggest, that an official statement be made of the probable financial effect of the raising of the money.” It will be soen from the foregoing that it was merely pointed out that Mr Mestayer had taken tho matter into account, and had .made a confident declaration. As was previously pointed out, Mr Mestayer thought fit to make severe remarks about others who had made estimates, and thus he would naturally render his own plans liable to severe comment. Mr Lysnar has raised points that aro entitled to an answer. But all this does not disnose of our contention that the financial position should ho shown. What is the use of fighting about sites if it is shown that the cheapest one is beyond the means of the people ? What wo desire is that more information should bo given to the peoplo,-and no Councillor can reasonably object to that. Indeed we look to Councillor Lysnar as a staunch supporter of that proposal.
