To-day is the shortest day of the year. The Government have made presents of gold nuggets and greenstones to the Duke aud Duchess. At the meeting last night it was decided to hold the annual poultry show on the 26th and 27th July. The memorial service at Holy Trinity Church on Sunday night is to be conducted by the Rev. Mr Cornwall was the name of a gentleman suggested at the poultry fanciers’ meeting last night as a judge at the show next month. Captain Edwin reported yesterday : “ West to south-west and south gale ; glass rise ; tides high ; sea heavy outside, and much colder weather.” Poultry was tho subject last night among the fanciers, and one gentleman affirmed that a turkey on the Haiti some years ago had a brood of 36 chickens. Owing to the repairs that are being done to the Homan Catholic Church at Ormond there will be no mass at Qrmond at 11 on Sunday, but there will be mass at'Wae-renga-a-liilca. A cablegram from Melbourne states : In the Federal Parliament it was stated that it would require 57,000 Lee-Enfields, costing £284,000, to equip the Australian volunteer forces.
Though -» all the Borough Council schemes so far have only got to the extent of a hand cart, the streets are now being kept in excellent order in regard to cleanliness, the Overseer having Mr Stuckey in'that department. Mr G. Smith, hairdresser and tobacconist, Gladstone road, has a change of advertisement in this issue. All the best brands of cigars, cigarettes, and tobaccos are kept in stock by Mr Smith, as well as a first-class lot of such goods as are usually kept by tobacconists. The Chief Postmaster advises us that the Gisborne portion of the San Francisco mail, ex Mariposa, was kept at Auckland for despatoh by the Star of England, which was advertised to sail yesterday, but has now been postponed until noon to-day. It will therefore reach Gisborne to-morrow evening.
Owing to an unfortunate error, it was made to appear that the rehearsal for the memorial service for next Sunday evening at Holy Trinity Church was to have been held last evening at the church. As will be seen from our advertising columns, the rehearsal is this (Friday) evening at the schoolroom, and it is to be hoped that there will be a full muster of both bandsmen and Orchestral Society members,

Morgan) was engaged yostorday taking the lovels of Peel stroet for tho purpose of reporting to tho Council on the cost of the forming and metalling of tho street to tho west of Gladstone road. Peel street will soon bo a very important thoroughfare, being in tho main lino of traffic to the railway station.
Ladios who crowded to the Government House reception are much concerned about tho stato of their drosses. There was not sufficient accommodation in Government House, and after they had been presented they were turned out in the rain on to the lawn, which soon became a quagmire. Many beautiful costumes obtained specially for the occasion were ruined. A strolling band of musicians gave an open-air concert in Peel-street this morning, and attracted a good crowd. One of their number, who possessed a fine tenor voice, sang several of the latest operatic numbers, and was listened to with much attention. They got from one song to aiiothcruntil they came to “Good Old Jeff,” and just as the gentleman who was taking the solo reached the line, “ Disturb him not but let him rest,” a couple of policemen arrived on the scene and broke up the happy party. A lady residing in this district, whose son went South with the Mutawbero Cadet Corps, wrote as follows to a local firm of drapers:—“ Mr Marshall, of Matawliero, sent word last night that ho would take my boy |with his cadets to Christchurch to-day. Could you get his khaki pants ready by three o’clock'? If you are too busy, get them made by a tailor.” The writer concluded : “It took six days to make the world, and surely it is not impossible to have a pair of khaki pants made by three o’clock.” Needless to say, the boy’s outfit was provided in good time.
A correspondent writes commenting on the case of tho boys who have been charged with annoying Thomas Cummings, but as the case is sub judice the comments are not allowable. The correspondent says that “it is about time some steps were taken to prevent the rough boys of Gisborne from annoying the man Thomas Cummings. Many a night when I have been passing this spot I have noticed about a dozen of them knocking this man about. They do all kinds of things to him ; for instance I saw one of them pick up a lump of iron and throw it at him.”
“It is a disgraceful state of affairs,” said a person who called at the Times office last evening, “that thousands of pounds are being wasted on the Ducal celebrations, while here we are without roads fit to travel on more than a month in the year. Look at the Karaka railway 1 I No funds ’ is _thc cry when it is asked why it is not more quickly pushed on; yet men and boys are being taken from all parts of New Zealand for a picnic in Christchurch at the taxpayers' expenso.” No doubt, there are many who will agree with the speaker. The Liberal Government’s liberality with the people’s money is becoming positively shocking. The policy seems to be drifting in the direction of all play and no work. But when tho bills are due, in the words of the song, “there’ll be a hot time.”
