AUCKLAND NEWS.

MARINE SURVEYS. [By Telegraph—Press Association]. Auckland, last night. H.M.S. surveying vessel Penguin left this morning for Tauranga, where she is to be engaged on survey duty. VALUABLE GIFTS. The total value of the Native presents given to tho Luke and Duchess of Pork at Rotorua is now estimated at between -£IOOO and £2OOO. Victoria Taitoko Kemp, of Wanganui, and her own people alone gave 87 fine mats worth probably on an average about £5 each. The greenstone weapons given were worth a very large sum. One of these hod been in the hands of the donor’s tribe for some thirteen generations. Three of the whalebone weapons presented were long flat swords made from ribs of sperm whale, and ornamented with tufts of white dog s hair near the handle. These relics of the past are far rarer than other weapons, and their value in Maori eyes is very considerable. _
