OBITUARY.

FUNERAL OF THE LATE ME 1 , • W. The cortege left It leceased’s late residence, Grey street, shortly after two o’clock, the procession n somprising between thirty and forty car- fj riages, as well as a large following on I horse and on foot. The City Band, under e Bandmaster Morrison, marched in front of the cortege to Holy Trinity Church, s where a short service,was held before pro- c ceeding to Makaraka cemotery. The roadway from the residence to the church 1 was lined with spectators. Upon arriving s at the church the coffin was taken from 1 the hoarse and carried into, tho building, ' Messrs M. Foster, ,T. H. Ormond, A. J. Massey, C. Adair, H. Barton, E. Chrisp, 1 H. D.' Parker, and G. Palairet acting as ' pall-bearers. It was preceded into church 1 by the Rev. Canon Webb, who repeated < the opening sentences of tho .burial ser- 1 vice. The coffin was then placed in tho ■ chancel, and tho verses of the 90th Psalui, “ Lord, Thou hast been our refuge,” were alternately read by the Kev. Canon Webb and the members of the congregation. The special portion of Scripture taken from St. Paul's first epistlo to the Corinthians having been read, the hymn “ -For Ever With Tho Lord” was sung by tho choir and congregation, Mr Taylor presiding at the organ. The coffin, which was literally lost to view in a number of beautiful wreaths, was then conveyed back to the hearse, tho procession reforming and proceeding to Makaraka. The chief mourners were Mr E. W. Wells, of Patutahi (father-in-law of deceased), Mr R. Wells (brother-in-law), Mrs Manand her son, and the Rev. J. G. Paterson being also in tho carriage. Tho second carriage was occupied by Captain Chrisp, Messrs J. W. Bright, E. Chrisp, W. Chrisp, and M. L. Foster. “ The Dead March," in “ Saul,” was impressively played by tho City Band as tho cortogo turned into Gladstone road, and again when the procession reached the cemetery. The Rev. Canon Webb concluded tho burial service commenced in the church, and the hymn, “ Days and Moments Quickly Flying,” was sung with great pathos by the members of the Choir and the assemblage round the grave, the City Band accompanying. Mr Ellery, tho chaplain of the Foresters’ Lodge, of which deceased was a member, then read the funeral homily from the ritual of tho Lodge, and Canon Wobb concluded the service at the grave with the Benediction. There was a large attendance at the cemetery, amongst those present being the Rev. Canon Fox, who came in from Waerenga-a-hika. The wreaths sent by friends were so numerous that a second vehicle had to be obtained to carry them to the cemetery.'* One very beautiful wreath, composed entirely of immortelles, was sent by the members of Holy Trinity choir.
