POSERS.
Some posers arc being asked in Christchurch (says the Truth) by certain people in view of the coming festivities: — “ Oh, what shall I wear,” Says the lady fair, “ At the Duko of York’s reception '? I’ve the pink and mauve With old laeo wove, A lovely and quaint conception. Ah ! that exquisite gown, Tho smartest in town, I lay it aside with compunction ! For black is ordained, And I am constrained To buy a new dress for the function.” “ Oh ! what shall I do ? ” Says the gentleman who Is invited to dine with his Highness. . “ They have not asked my wife, And I can’t, for my life, Overcome single handed my shyness. And yet I must go To the dinner, although, The prospect is wearing me thinner. For the very good reason To refuse is rank treason ; Oh ! why was I asked to tho dinner ? ” “ Oh 1 what shall I say,” Says Hon. James, “ if they Should want mo to kneel and be knighted ? As a plain democrat I can’t accept that, For my word to my party I’vo plighted. Yes—that’s so—and yet, As a big baronet, Most dearly I'd like to be posing. Oh, why did I swear, From the ‘ Sir ’ to forbear ? Oh ! what a fine chance I am losing.”
