WAIROA NOTES.

(Times Correspondent.) CALEDONIAN SOCIAL. The first Caledonian social was held on Tuesday evening, June 7, in Hewitt’s hall, and was a very pleasant affair. Numerous dances were indulged in, and the music was supplied by Misses Bax, Parker, N. and M. Poyzer, and- D. Hewitt, and was excellent. TOWN BOARD. The Town Board hold their usual meeting on Juno 4, all the members being present. The poundkeeper forwarded Til 8s 6d, proceeds to the Board, also from Registrar of Dogs T 1 2s 6d, proceeds to the Board.

It was decide! to insure all the Board's employes, under the Workers’ Compensation Act, for £2OO of wages per annum. It was decided to strike off the sum of £2 5s 3s and T 1 9s sd, rents duo as appearing in the balanco-eheet, and owing by the Rev. W. Lambert and D. Curtis, these rents having been paid in advance.. The question of writing off two or three large rent accounts outstanding for j r ears past was not entertained by the Board. It was decided to issue a summons in one instance, and wait a favorable opportunity with the others. Mr Hayno wished to know how much longer tho asphalting in Marino Parade was going to take, and what was the probable cost. He noticed there was another stoppage. The Chairman explained that he had not ordered enough shingle, hut the work would ho finished as soon as possible. It was decided to tar the whole of the path between Delhi and Locke streets. Correspondence from tho Harbor Board, asking the Town Board to go on with tho grading of tho river bank : Tho Chairman stated that another plank was needed at the bottom, and after some discussion Mr Gardiner movod that the sloping of the bank be held over, pending the result of loan applications. There being no seconder, Mr Mayo proposed and Mr Hayno seconded, “ That the Harbor Board be asked to put an extra plank in the retaining wall where required, and the board wquld see to the grading of tho bank afc oilce.”

Mr H'ayne wished to know if the Clerk had written to tho Harbour Board for permission to take gravel from the Heads. The Clerk, in reply, said he had spoken to sevoral of tho members, and they were not willing. Permission was given to Mr Costfey to 1 put a culvert across tho footpath in Delhi-street. Mr Corkill said he would like to see a few chains of the Marine Parade metalled with black metal from the beach. The Chairman said he had an offer from Mr Moran to cart it at 4s per yard. Mr Hayne considered tho metal should be screened ; one shilling a yard should clear the cost of screening. It was decided that tenders be called for carting 50 yards of black shinglo from the beach at per yard. A number of accounts were passed for payment and the meeting closed. GISBORNE RIFLES. A few members of the Gisborne Mounted Rifles passed through hero on the morning of the 10th, on their way to Napier, en route to Wellington. The horses and men looked none the worse for their trip from Gisborne. LOCAL CORPS. The local corps leavc'ticro on tho 11th inst. overland to Napier, whore they entrain with tho rest of the East Coast battalion for Wellington. Tho uniforms are to be ready on arrival at Wellington. Our boys will look a trifle out of place in mufti, when their other comrades are spie and span in their regimentals. However, our Boer commando will look as well as the best when they don their now uniforms.
