A sailor named Henry White, belonging to the Pylades, a patient in the district hospital, died while under chloroform, previous to an operation being performed to-day. White had strained himself rather severely about a fortnight ago, and he was admitted into the hospital to be operated upon. It is stated that Dr Woodward was administering an anaesthetic, and after struggling violently for a little while the man dropped back dead. There were present when the fatality occurred Dr Williams (who was going to operate), Dr Pabst, and Dr Inglis, and Dr Afford, of H.M.S. Pylades, came while artificial respiration was being employed, but although everything was done to restore animation, the patient never breathed again. An inquest will be held.
