Mr W. A. Barton, S.M., left Tolago yesterday for Awanui, where he holds a sitting of the Court.
Messrs Beere, Leslie, Holmes, Beasley, Goldsmith, and Larsen have bookod passages by the Weka, which leaves for Napier this afternoon. His Worship the Mayor (Mr John Townley), leaves for Wellington this afternoon.
Mr A. T. Hookey is among the Gis bornites at present in Botorua. Mr L. Clayton, of Tiniroto, is at presont in town.
Mr J. Macfarlane, County Chairman, will be presont at the meeting of East Coast settlers to be held at Tolago Bay this evening.
Captain King will hold an inspection parade of the Matawhero cadet corps this afternoon.
Ensign and Mrs Hill, of the Salvation Army, are under orders to leave Gisborne within the next fortnight. Their successors have not yet boon appointed. Bev. W. J. O’Connor will hold mass at Patutahi at 9 a.m. to-morrow, and at Waerenga-a-hika at 11 o’clock.
There will be an investiture of the order of St. Michael and St. George at Government House, Wellington, when it is understood that Mr Ward and Mr McKenzie will be knighted, and that Commissioner Gudgeon, of Baratonga, will be made a G.M.G.
Some Ministers ride in carriages, but according to the Times’ Botorua correspondent ;the Duke prefers to walk with Mr Carroll. Several contemporaries have it that W. Pitt, just returned from South Africa, is in harness again for North Shore (Auckland). It may be news, therefore, to mention that he played for the Athletic Ciub in their three-quarter lino;—Krc° Lance.
At the election at the Druids’ Lodge on Thursday night, Bro. H. Miller, A.D., presided, and now becomes the Junior Past Arch Druid. Bros. D- C. Hawkins and H. Burns were re-elected auditors.
Mrs E. Bangiuia informs us that her husband has changed his mind about staying in Christchurch. He finds the climate too severe there, and intends returning to Gisborne.
A presentation of a very pleasing nature took place at Holy Trinity Church last evening, when Mr W. Hamblett, of the local Union S.S. Company’s staff, was presented by the members of the choir with a handsome set of gold sleeve-links, prior to his leaving Gisborne for Dunedin. The presentation was made by the Bev. Canon Webb, who referred to the esteem and respect in which |Mr Hamblett was held by all members of the choir. Accompanying the gift was the following letter, signed by Mr E. D. Smith, Hon. Secretary of the Choir s —“ On the eve of your departure, I desire to express to you, on behalf of the members of the Holy Trinity Choir, our sincere regret that you are leaving our midst, and we beg you to accept the accompanying gift, as a memento oiryour connection with our choir, and as a-slight token of the esteem in which-you have been held whilst among us. Wb'lrust that in your future career you will have every happiness and prosperity.”;,.-' Mr Hamblett suitably replied, thanking the members of the Choir for their kindness.
