"TATTERSALL.”
Oor cablegrams show that another attempt is being made to deal with the great gambling organisation known as Tattcrsall. Tasmania, which derives yearly .thousands of pounds profit from “ Tattcrsall,” has petitioned the Federal Parliament for the suppression of the sweeps ; but evidently the plea is not by any moans unanimous, for one of tho members has opposed the suggested suppression. If driven out they will, ho states, probably go to New Zealand or’ Hongkong. This is simply bluff, as. the member well • knows that a sweep cannot be even advertised in New Zealand, nor even an unauthorised art'unioii. • There is not much likelihood at -present of the position of Tat-tersall being affected, -but tho Government of New Zealand should attempt to deal with the evil in some way. From every little community hundreds of pounds arc sent yearly to Tasmania, and it can surely be no worse sin to allow it to be sent elsewhere than' TO have properly-conducted sweeps in New-Zealand. If the Government is impotent to prevent the sending of the money from New' Zealand, the colony should in some way be protected.. It. is a farce to debar people from taking shares in sweeps in the colony, yet they can with impunity send it elsewhere. The present system, or want of system, may suit as a blind to humbug people who know no better, but it is a great loss to the State without any compensating advantage in the way of a lessened amount of gambling.
