MRS SMITH BORROWS MONEY.

In tho Conway murdor case Jessie Pearson, of Waikouaiti, Otago, deposed that she know accused for a couple of years. She had advanced her £IOO in February, 1899, due in twelve months. Accused re- I turned the amount at tho end of tho term, and then asked for a further loan, tho same sum being granted, and a promissory note being given at tho end for a further twelve months. She gave accused timo to pay 7. Mrs Smith. explained that she was going to Sydney to seo a lady and gentleman whoso child she had saved. James Bussell, ex-steward of the Taluno, deposed that tho morning after Conway’s death ho wont to take accused’s order for breakfast. She asked him whether they were going to take the body to port or bury it at sea. He replied that they would not bury it at sea, as they would reach Sydnoy next day. When tho vessel reached port accused gave witness a watch and chain to keep till next morning, stating that she was afraid of breaking or losing it. Sho informed witnoss that she had two others.
