By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, last night. The comet recently visible in the west was seen last night by Mr G. V. Hudson with a 3lin telescope. It is just entering Canis Minor, and is nearly due west of the star Beta in that constellation, right ascension 7 hours 3min, north decimation 9 hours.
The Premier is advised that Trooper Mehrtens (Rangiora), ill in South Africa, is slightly better. Stack, another invalid, is progressing favorably. It is understood that Mr McVilly is to become Chief Clerk of the Railway Department, in succession to Mr Waite, promoted to Dunedin.
Dunedin, last night. Mr Morrison, of Dunedin, £4923, is the successful tenderer for the new post office at Gore.
The Jutland Plats dredge, together with the ' special claim, was auctioned at £775. The capital of the Company was £15,000. •
Invercargill, last night
The Government have purchased the Ringway Estate, near Otautau, the property of Murray, Roberts, and Co. It contains about 2300 acres of capital land, and the railway runs close by. Surveyors are now engaged subdividing the property into five or six farms.
Auckland, last night.
The Conciliation Board award in the mining dispute granted a slight increase to the miners, viz., stopers, drive, chamber men, brace men, firemen, and toolsharpeners, 8s 4d ; breechers, 7s 6d; and other workers a slight advance. Re claim to reinstating of the men dismissed by the Wa’hi Company, the Board decided it was a matter for the Court, but recommended the Company to reimburse the Union the actual payment to the men.
Thames, last night. An inquest was opened to-day on William White, who was found dead in his house yesterday, the body lying alongside of the bed. Deceased lived alone. He was 70 years of age. It was decided to adjourn the inquest, to allow a post mortem to be held. It is notable that tributors this month obtained nearly seventeen hundred pounds from two hundred and eight tons of ore from the May Queen and Moanatairi mines.
Christchurch, last night. Mr E. S. Harley, for many years manager here for the Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, died last night. Napier, last night. An inquest was held at the Upper Mohaka on Saturday touching the death of the young man Thomas Lamb. No particulars are available beyond tho fact that tho jury returned a verdict of accidentally drowned through falling over a cliff into the river.
