The lion. J. Carroll has gone to Rotorua. Mr T. Adair leaves for Auckland this morning. Mr J. Score; of Gisborne, who has just returned to New Zealand from a trip to England and America, is expected to arrive in Gisborne by the Waikare this afternoon. Captain and Mrs Martin leave for Auckland by the Moura this morning. The death is announced of Sergeant Edmund Villars, formerly of this district. He died at Hawera last week from a stab received from a shoe-maker, whom he was
arresting. A letter from Auckland states that the three children of Mr Johnston, of the Grand Hotel, were only stopping at the hotel during their holidays, as they usually boarded at the Convent. The Rev. T. Macdonald, of Waipukurau, completed his evangelistic mission last evening, and this evening proceeds South. The Mayoress of Gisborne (Mrs .Townley) left for Wellington on Sunday, and will remain in the Empire City until after the Ducal celebrations. It is likely that the Mayor will take a run to Wellington after the next Council meeting.
Members of the Gisborne Bowling Club are requested to meet at the green this morning to make a presentation, subscribed by the Northern Association, to Mr Montiplay, Secretary of the Association, on the occasion of his marriage, which takes place this afternoon. Among the numerous wedding presents received by Captain and Mrs Martin was one from Miss Morse, who is at present in the Auckland Hospital suffering from injuries sustained through jumping from a window of the Grand Hotel when that building was on fire. A telegram received in Gisborne yesterday states that Miss Morse is making satisfactory progress towards recovery.
Mr-TF. E. Baume, solicitor, of Auckland, who is to advocate the granting of a license for the proposed Criterion Hotel in this town, arrives from Auckland by the Waikare this afternoon. Mr Baume is a prominent figure in connection with the NewjZealand Natives’ Association in Auckland ; likewise an enthusiastic volunteer officer, and a member of the University College Council,
